Parent Guidelines For Hockey Games

Before the game:
“Eliminate the hockey devils”
  • Make sure that there is gas in the car or arrange for a lift
  • Make sure that there is cash for sharpenings, tape, drinks, entrant fees, etc.
  • Have son/daughter follow nutrition regimen (3 to 4 hours before game time)
  • Verify schedule times
  • If your son/daughter is young, double check for skates, jock, helmet, etc.
  •  Be ready for your son/ daughter – don’t make your child wait and be late
  • If your son/daughter is older, ask if they need skates sharpened (adds time)
  • Bring warm jacket, sweater, hat, mitts (rinks are not a warm place)
  • Drive other players if necessary and leave on time
  • Let your son/daughter carry their own bag, offer to carry the stick
  • Meet with manager to discuss outstanding issues
  • Socialize with others
  • Offer to help out with stats for coach
During the game:
“Watch as if it was your best friend’s child”
  • Watch with enjoyment and pride
  • Keep any comments positive
  • Acknowledge other parents
  • In between periods, meet with the manager if needed
  • Take stats to help out the coach if you are asked
After the game:
“Share their fun”
  • Meet with manager to discuss any outstanding issues (funds, equipment, scheduling, etc.)
  • Socialize with other parents
  • Meet your son/daughter with a smile
  • Ask questions to make your child feel good about himself:
    • “Did you have fun?”
    • “How do you think you did?”
    • “What did you learn today
  • Let your son or daughter carry their own bag
  • Drive home
  • Explain the importance of hygiene - remind your child to:
    • Shower
    • Wash undergarments
    • Air out equipment
