Pete Gray’s Story - Any Thing is Possible!

Pete Gray was right-handed until he lost his right arm, at age six, when it had to be amputated above the elbow.  But this never diminished Gray’s enthusiasm for baseball, so he learned to bat and field one-handed, catching the ball in his glove and then quickly transferring it to his hand.  After much success in the minor leagues, the St. Louis Browns purchased Gray’s contract in 1945.  He played left field in 77 games, batting .218 with a .958 fielding percentage, a truly outstanding figure for a baseball player, regardless of available arms.  You can see the glove Pete Gray used in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.  Gray also proved himself an accomplished bunter. In order to bunt, he would plant the knob of the bat against his side, and would then slide his hand about one-third of the way up the shaft of the bat.  Watch this short video of this amazing man.
