Top 5 Important WHL Scholarships Questions to Consider
So you played in the WHL and earned your 4 years of scholarship money, so what now??? Here are five important issues for your consideration:
1) The 18 Month Rule – Are you prepared to give up your scholarship to go play minor professional hockey? You only have 18 months to use it or lose it; the CHL is banking on you not using it. Make certain you make the right decision for the right reason.
2) Coach Contacts – Does your coach have good CIS contacts across the country and does he care about helping you with CIS placement, when compared to promoting his NHL drafted players? If not, plan to self promote as effectively as possible.
3) Out of Sight, Out of Mind? – If you have been out of school for 2-3 years, are you prepared to study effectively at a university level? Coming from a hockey environment that doesn’t exactly encourage focussed ‘intellectual’ pursuits while you play, you have to be realistic about expectations.
4) Academic Qualifications – Do you qualify academically to get into a good school and Do you have a plan for your academic career at the university level without hockey in the picture?? Just because you have a ‘scholarship’ that doesn’t mean you will get into a highly respected university nor be able to play hockey with the varsity team. Know your options.
5) Money Don’t Buy You Love – Do you realize that just because you have ‘scholarship’ money, this does not mean that a CIS team has to let you play for their team? There are a lot of teams spread out across the country and many will be happy to have you come to them at no cost to themselves, but are you prepared to go to Nova Scotia or a school that barely cracks the top 50 in Canada just to continue your hockey career?
